My top 5’s of 2010

In alphabetical order.

Film:
Cyrus
I was very fortunate to win tickets to a screening of Cyrus. The film has some real laugh out moments, which is expected from Reilly and Hill. I’d definitely say it’s more of a drama, and a good one at that. Cyrus is raw, real and heartbreaking. It’s a real sleeper hit, wish this one went mainstream.
Exit Through The Gift Shop
It’s interesting having seen the film, hearing about people thinking that the story is more or less a hoax. I don’t care, it’s a great story, true or false. Being an aspiring filmmaker myself, I was blown away to see how well documented street art was. Everyone should see this film.
I’m Still Here
I rented this from iTunes after it’s limited theater release, I watched it three times in a 24-hour period on my iPhone, and I bought it the day it was released on Blu-Ray. It’s now apparent how much I love this film. Joaquin Phoenix has done a really brilliant thing here. He was in character for 18 months and fooled us all. I’m reminded of a Andy Kaufman-esque stunt, but way more elaborate. The depiction of a star wallowing in a seemingly bottomless pit of despair was so flawlessly portrayed. I got goosebumps, that’s not easy to do.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Like Inception, I saw Scott Pilgrim three times in theaters. Being a Michael Cera fan was a huge part of this decision to go see it. It’s like an NES made love to a comic book/graphic novel and had a slightly awkward baby together. Knives is an underrated character, I’m anxious to watch the alternate ending that includes her.
True Grit
At the time of this writing, I have seen True Grit twice now. I loved every single moment of it. I believe the Coen’s tried to make a audience-pleasing film, and they succeeded. Jeff Bridges was absolutely brilliant. Matt Damon was great as a character that wasn’t a Bourne Identity clone. Hailee Steinfeld carried the entire movie on her back, with such a strong command.

Honorable mentions:
Get Him To The Greek
Inception
Jackass 3D

The Social Network
Toy Story 3

Music:
Arcade Fire - The Suburbs

Gorillaz - Plastic Beach

Vampire Weekend - Contra

Venetian Snares - My So-Called Life

Wise Blood - `+`

Honorable mentions:
Autechre - Oversteps
The Books - The Way Out
Buckethead - Shadows Between The Sky
Girl Talk - All Day
Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross - The Social Network

You should go see this movie. It was fantastic. Michael Cera was great. If you’re a fan of video games, you will love it!
